Vietnamese plastic bags face U.S. lawsuit

Vietnamese plastic bags are facing an anti-dumping lawsuit from two U.S. companies, according to the Vietnam Competition Authority.

Lawyers representing Hilex Poly Company and Superbag Corporation filed petitions to the U.S. Department of Commerce and the U.S. International Trade Commission on Tuesday, targeting plastic shopping bags imported from Vietnam, Indonesia and Taiwan.

The plaintiffs also filed a countervailing duty lawsuit to Vietnamese polyethylene retail carrier bags.

According to Vietnam South Plastics Association, 59 Vietnamese producers of polyethylene bags, 10 of which are foreign-invested, are named in the lawsuits.

Vietnam exported some 17.5 billion polyethylene bags worth US$177 million to the U.S. market between 2006 and 2008.

In June 2003, the same two U.S. companies also sued China, Malaysia and Thailand for dumping plastic shopping bags in their domestic market.
