National university told to seek world ranking

HCM CITY — The HCM City National University must strive to become a major internationally-recognised centre of education, research and technology, President Nguyen Minh Triet said during a visit to the institution yesterday.

In remarks to 3,000 university administrators and faculty members and 50,000 students, Triet also urged the university to improve its teaching quality to lure more students, especially from the neighbouring countries of Laos and Cambodia.

By doing so, he said, the university would meet the increasing demand for human resources during international economic integration.

Triet also urged the university to better co-ordinate with authorities in HCM City and the neighbouring province of Binh Duong to hasten construction of new campus and student residence facilities.

He hailed the university’s recent achievements, particularly its efforts to build a top-quality national multi-disciplinary university. But, he said, the university needed to better co-ordinate with domestic and foreign partners in attracting talent and investment.

The university’s president, Prof Dr Phan Thanh Binh, told Triet that the university was focused on enhancing research and education towards reaching international standards; attracting a higher -quality faculty; and improving physical facilities.

The university’s reputation was improving regionally and worldwide, Binh said.

The university, formed in 1995, includes five affiliated institutions: the University of Technology, the University of Natural Resources, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, the University of Information Technology and the International University. — VNS
