Leader lauds Japan for role in region

TOKYO — Party General Secretary Nong Duc Manh said that Viet Nam has always attached much importance to developing co-operative relations with Japan.
He said Viet Nam appreciated Japan’s help in coping with the world financial crisis. Japan would play an active and important role in the cause of peace, co-operation and development in the Asia-Pacific region and in the world at large, he said.
The Party leader made the statement on Monday at his meetings with Speaker of the House of Representatives Kono Yohei and President of the House of Councillors Eda Satsuki during his official visit to Japan.
Manh said he was happy to see that strong relations between the two countries had developed in politics, economy and culture along with an increase in exchanges between the two peoples and visits by high-ranking leaders from both sides.
He expressed his appreciation for the Japanese Government’s Official Development Assistance (ODA), which has contributed to Viet Nam’s socio-economic development as well as hunger eradication and poverty alleviation programmes. He also expressed appreciation for Japan’s phivate direct investment in Viet Nam.
He said Viet Nam would co-operate with Japan to spend Japan’s ODA effectively, and strictly implement the measures set by the Joint Committee to Fight Corruption.
He said Viet Nam wanted Japan’s continued co-operation in implementing large-scale projects like the North-South Express, North-South Railway Express and the Hoa Lac Hi-Tech Zone.
Manh said he hoped the Japanese officials would get the Japanese Parliament to ratify the Viet Nam-Japan Economic Partnership Agreement signed last year.
Kono Yohei and Eda Satsuki said the Japanese Parliament had always supported Viet Nam and wished relations between the two countries to develop further.
They said Viet Nam was Japan’s most important partner in Asia.
The two leaders also said they would do their best to encourage the Japanese Parliament to ratify the Viet Nam-Japan Economic Partnership Agreement soon.
Party leaders meet
Yesterday, Party leader Manh had meetings with leaders of several of Japan’s political parties including chairman of the Japanese Communist Party (JCP) Kazuo Shii, president of the Komei Party Akihiro Ota, vice president of the Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ) Katsuya Okada, president of the People’s New Party Tamisuke Watanuki and leader of the Social Democratic Party of Japan Mizuho Fukushima.
At the meetings, the Party General Secretary expressed his happiness at the development in bilateral political, economic and cultural relations.
Viet Nam considered its relationship with Japan as one of its most important, Manh told Japan’s party leaders, and added that Viet Nam wanted to promote relations with Japanese political parties.
Japanese party leaders praised the developing relations between Japan and Viet Nam and said the relations should be further enhanced in the future.
They also spoke highly of Viet Nam’s solutions to economic problems during the world financial crisis.
The parties leaders expressed their belief that Viet Nam would overcome present difficulties and succeed in building and developing the country.
The JCP president and DPJ vice president supported the Japanese Government in providing ODA to Viet Nam and said they hoped the country would effectively use the capital.
The same day, Manh also met with chairman of the Japan-Viet Nam Friendship Association Furuta Motoo, chairman of the Japan Business Federation (KEIDANREN) Fujio Mitarai and chairman of the Sumitomo Group Susumu Kato.
He worked with the Japan-Viet Nam Parliamentary Friendship Association, Special Ambassador for Japan-Viet Nam Relationships Ryotaro Sugi and President of the Japan International Co-operation Agency Sadako Ogata.
Yesterday afternoon, the Party leader visited the Fukuoka prefecture, where he gave a reception for the governor, Wataru Aso. — VNS
