Ha Noi to host physics olympiad
... decided that the capital would host the 39th International Physics Olympiad (IPhO), an annual competition for secondary school students, running from July 20 to 29 next year.
Around 100 delegations from various countries and territories will attend the 2008 IPhO. Each delegation will be composed of nine members, including leaders, students and observers.
The 39th IPhO will be accompanied by the World Federation of Physics Competitions (WFPhC) congress, which is set to attract over 80 representatives from across the world. The congress will take place between next July 29 and August 2.
Delegates will be treated to a number of cultural exchanges, arts, sports, sight-seeing and tourism events during their visit to Viet Nam.
To take charge of the occasion, the Prime Minister appointed Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education and Training Nguyen Thien Nhan as chairman of the National Committee for Preparations and Organisation of the event.
The position of 2008 IPhO Organising Committee chairman will be held by a Deputy Minister of Education and Training.
In the 2007 IPhO, organised in Iran, the Vietnamese delegation won four medals, two gold and two silver.

Finance, monetary consultancy council set up
... agreed to establish the National Finance and Monetary Consultancy Council, which will give advice to the Government and the Prime Minister in financial and monetary policy-making.
Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Sinh Hung will be the council’s chairman and the post of deputy chairman will go to former State Bank governor Le Duc Thuy.

Gov’t to dole out advance for medical insurance
Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Sinh Hung has given Viet Nam Social Insurance (VSI) the green light to use VND2 trillion (US$125 million) from the Compulsory Social Insurance Fund as advance payment for medical insurance.
This amount will be given in advance to healthcare centres where medical insurance card holders receive medical checks and treatment in the first quarter of 2008.
The VSI has to pay back the money by the end of next year.
The deputy prime minister asked the VSI to step up control over the cost of medical checks and treatment for medical insurance card holders. He said healthcare centres which misuse the Medical Insurance Fund will be punished.
The Health Ministry will be responsible for writing up proposals on the adjustment of medical insurance fees for the poor, ethnic minority people, the elderly and children under six.
