2 bridges being built to end ropeway river crossing

Construction of two lightweight iron suspension bridges began this week over the Poko River in the Central Highlands province of Kontum and will be finished in September.

Residents have been crossing the river using ropeways since last September when floods swept away all the bridges in the area.

Both will be 1.2 meters wide, authorities in the remote Dak Ang and Dak Nong communes said Tuesday.

One will be 167m long and cost VND1 billion (US$52,600) and the other will be 240m and cost VND1.5 billion.

The bridges, which will have a capacity of 500kg, are meant for pedestrians and motorbikes.

Around 60 local residents will benefit from the bridges.
