DONG NAI PROVINCE - DEVELOPMENT POTENTIALITIES
1- Processing industries for agricultural products and foodstuffs
These industries are well conditioned by abundant local raw materials and
a large consumption market, at the same time they are beneficiaries of
development investment incentives. So, for the period 1996 - 2000 they
attained a growth of 12,8% per year, and in 2000 they accounted for 23,9% of
the Province total industrial production. The main products of the industries
in 2000 are raw and refined sugar, seasoning powder, manioc starch, cashew
nuts, cashew nut rind oil, powder milk of all kinds, foodstuffs in form of
powder, livestock peed, processed coffee, refreshing drinks, tobacco as raw
material and cigarettes, confectionaries, fibred cotton, canned fruit juices,
livestock and poultry slaughter...
For the period 2001 - 2005, processing industries for foodstuffs, food and
drinks will continue to receive incentive benefits, especially the cane sugar
industry, vegetable and fruit processing, canned foodstuffs and livestock -
poultry processing.
2- Mechanical industries:
The mechanical industries which produce machinery and equipment for other
branches which are considered infrastructures for industries. For this
reason, in order to carry out industrialization and modernization, the
mechanical industries must fulfill their role satisfactorily. In the period
1996 - 2000, the growth rate attained 20% per year and in 2000 production
values accounted for 7,5% of the total industrial production value. Dong Nai
has set up a plan for developing mechanical industries on Dong Nai territory
up to 2010, especially in the following fields :
a) Mechanical industries for manufacturing, building and repair of
agricultural machines consist mainly of : explosive engines of all kinds,
rubber rollers, cereal milling machines, hand agricultural tools and
accessories of all kinds... In addition to improving technological capability
and in depth investment in existing enterprises, it is necessary to set up
projects which can attract investors to mechanical industries as follows :
-Projects for setting up foundries, thermo-metallurgy factories, forming
and stamping factories.
-Setting up enterprises for maintaining and repairing agricultural
machines in one-crop specialized regions of the province.
-Setting up enterprises for manufacturing equipment used in agricultural
product processing : driers, livestock feed grinders, milling machines...
b) Mechanical industries for manufacturing, assembling and repairing cars,
motorcycles : we have received 16 foreign investment projects with fairly
advanced and components of high quality to be supplied to car and motor
assembly lines. Together with the increasing needs for cars of all kinds
every year, the needs for car repairs every year are also increasing. So, for
the period of 2001-2010 Dong Nai continues to call for investment capital for
mechanical manufacture projects to uplift the local participation ratio in
the assembly and meet the need of repair of cars and motorcycles increasing
more and more.
c) Mechanical industries for making and repairing machines, equipment and

3-Textile and garment industries
In Dong Nai there are many textile factories, such as TaiNan Company,
Tongkook Company, Choong Nam Company and Dong Nai agriculture can supply raw
cotton to textile factories for making fabrics and garments. Dong Nai is also
situated within a region designed for developing textile and garment
industries of the whole nation, and has an abundant and relatively cheap
labour force. Dong Nai has planned Nhon Trach Industrial Zone which gives
first priority to textile and dying industries. With the above advantages,
for the period 1996-2000 Dong Nai textile and garment industries grew by 44%
per year, their production value in 2000 accounted for 12,47% of the province
total industrial production value, of which the textile industries accounted
for 9.89% and the garment industries for 2,58%. Textile and garment industry
products in 2000 : 43,5 million meters of fabrics, 76,500 tons of yarn and 18
million garments of all kinds.
In the national development strategy for textile and garment industries,
Dong Nai is allowed to continue calling for more investment capitals for
developing textile and garment industries with the following norms to achieve
by 2010 :
- Fabrics of all kinds : 235 million meters
- Ready-made garment : 98,3 million products comprising jackets, shirts,
trousers, women's underwear, sportswear, jeans...
- - Over 150,000 tons of yarn of all kinds.
4. Chemicals industries:
Together with the fast growth of all industries, the chemicals industries
in Dong Nai Province have become rapidly a field attracting many investors,
not only foreigner investors who have brought new technologies, and advanced
equipment, but domestic chemicals industries in Dong Nai have made
improvements to enhance the quality of products used in other production
branches, such as acids, soda, chlorine, inorganic acids, chemical petroleum
products, chemical pharmaceutical products...especially in agriculture and
the countryside industrialization through the production and supply of
fertilizers and chemical insecticides, chemicals for consumption... In the
period 1995-2000 the growth rate was 27.2% per year and the production value
accounted for 11.4% of the whole branch production value.
In the order to meet the development needs of the agricultural products
processing industries in the province, to encourage investors to invest in
the making of packages and clue for packaging foodstuffs. To aim at using
local raw materials in processing industries for the purpose of enhance
competitiveness on the domestic market, and also for export, Dong Nai is
continuing to orient its development in the direction of chemicals industries
through key production divisions such as the production of basic inorganic
chemicals, chemical insecticides, chemicals for domestic use, fertilizers,
chemical raw materials. In addition, Dong Nai is located in a region having
many market advantages because enterprises here have great needs for chemical
petroleum products, this is very favorable for the development of chemical
petroleum industries in the province. And after Dung Quat petroleum
refineries are put into operation, Dong Nai will be provided with abundant
local raw materials which enable its chemical petroleum industries to become
the main supply source of production raw materials to enterprises in the
southern key economic region.
The chemical products which are encouraged to develop for he period
2001-2010 are: washing detergents, paints, cleansers, fertilizers, glue,
mosquito killing coils, insecticides and chemicals for domestic use.
5.- Mineral exploitation industries
In the eastern region of South-VietNam, Dong Nai Province has abundant
mineral resources, especially those which are used to make ordinary building
materials. Over the past years minerals used for making building materials
have been exploited efficaciously, such as building sand, filling sand,
building stones, clay for making bricks and tiles, kaolin..., which meet the
economic development needs of the whole region. In the period 1996-2000, the
growth rate was 12.05% per year and the value of these products accounted for
6.9% of the total industries production value of 2000.
In addition to the above resources which have been exploited, in Dong Nai
there are other resources the exploitation of which requires large investment
capitals, modern technologies to make high quality and widely used products.
They are:
+ Keramzite raw material: this is an artificial product in form of gravel
chips, light and very solid, made by baking easily meltable clay rapidly. It
is used to replace gravel and sand for making light concrete, heat insulators
in tall buildings or reinforcing weak foundations. Dong Nai has many great
reserves of calcareous clay in form of schists, raw material for making
keramzite, located from Dai An to Tri An and Hieu Liem-Ma Da foresting farm
area.
+Puzzolan raw material: This cement additive is abundant in Dong Nai. At
present 23 mines have been discovered, of which there are 4 big mines, 9
medium and 10 small ones, concentrated mainly in the districts of Dinh Quan,
Long Khanh, Tan Phu... Puzzolan is a mineral with great potentialities and a
strong advantage of Dong Nai. It can be a profitable object of investment and
research for making fibreglass.
+ Mineral water - hot water: In Dong Nai 5 mineral water and hot water
sources have been discovered. Among them there are two bicarbonate hot water
sources at Phu Loc and Kaya, a magnesium - bicarbonate water source at Suoi
Nho, two super tasteless water sources at Tam Phuoc and Nhon Trach. These are
precious mineral water sources which can be exploited with high economic
profits. In addition there are ferrous water sources concentrated mainly
south of Thanh Tuy Ha. Their iron content is 10-15 g/l. they also contain
NaCl in the ratio of 1.2-2.3 g/l. Their flow is 500 - 1000 m3/day.
+ Gold: People have discovered 17 mines and mineral points concentrated
mainly in the northern part of the Province. Among them, tow small mines in
Vinh An and Hieu Liem have great expectations, are being prospected and
exploited exhaustively. Others have good potentialities but have not been
assessed fully, such as gold mineral points at Suoi Ty, Suoi Nho, Tam Bung,
Sa Manh spring 1, Sa Manh spring 2, Vinh An foresting farm, La Nga foresting
farm, Da Hour spring, Hang Nai spring... At a number of mines and points it
has been assessed that their gold reserves are of grades P2 and P2+C2 with a
total quantity of more than 8.000 kg. Of 18 mines and mineral points, 15
contain mainly minerals of quartz - gold and quartz - auric chloride.
6.- Electric and electronic industries
These industries are developing rapidly for the domestic market full of
potentialities and for export to the countries in the region. The scientific
and technological level of electric and electronic factories is enhanced to
that of the countries in the region and the world. At the same time these
industries are given special investment and development incentives. In the
period 1996-2000, they achieved a growth of 30.70% per year and in 2000 their
total production value accounted for 16.5% of the Province total production
value.
For the period 2001-2010 Dong Nai continues inviting foreign investment
and making in-depth investments for the purpose of developing eclectic and
electronic industries much more, heightening electric product quality, step

electric fans of all kinds, electric engines of all kinds, electric wires,
batteries, medium frequency transformers, electric meters, electric cables,
telephonic wires, telecommunication equipment, electric appliances (TV sets,
washing machines, refrigerators, air conditioners...) products for
information technology development.
7.- Leather industries
These industries account for a high ratio and use many workers. In 2000
leather products accounted for 10.57% of the total industries production
value with an average growth of 37% for the period 1996-2000. Besides shoes
and slippers, which are the main products, there are also other leather and
simili-leather articles, such as suit-cases, handbags, simili-fabrics... in
which domestic and foreign investors are interested in investments for
development.
For the period 2001-2010, Dong Nai continues to attract investments to
leather, footwear and simili-leather production industries. New leather
